Annotation | The impact of touch on older people receiving care from nurses is explored. This monograph reviews the available literature on touch, providing pointers for practice and enabling readers to recognise and consider how they use touch within their practice, why they use certain touches with certain people in certain situations, and what the effects of touch may be. For many older patients, using and receiving touch is an important component of their nursing care which can convey trust, build rapport, and promote feelings of safety, security and comfort. Despite growing interest in this component of communication, coupled with both anecdotal and empirical evidence promoting the use of touch, some nurses still confine their use of touch to "task-focused" interactions. Alongside this, some patients are themselves concerned about who touches them and the type(s) of touch they receive. (RH). |
