Annotation | A secondary data analysis of a study replicating an earlier study conducted in Poland uses three measures of quality of life (QoL) used in the earlier study - self-assessments of health, initiatives, and fulfilment of plans and wishes - to develop a composite measure. Results show that Polish-American ethnic elders had significantly better subjective QoL than Polish-immigrant elders, who in turn had better subjective QoL than older Poles in Poland. These conclusions lend support to the idea that US-born older people and older immigrants to the US have access to an American cultural construct of "vital ageing". However, immigration is also a risk factor worthy of being added to the traditional "triple jeopardy". (RH). |
