AnnotationUsing data from men in the US Normative Aging Study, the authors considered the distinction between health-related quality of life (HQL, assessed on 12 scales) and well-being (WB, assessed by 7 scales). They hypothesised that these two constructs would be distinct factorially, and that derived factors would have different correlates. Correlation between scales of HQL and WB were moderate. Even though the two constructs are conceptually related, results suggest that HQL is distinct from WB. Gerontologists should readily adopt HQL, which maintains continuity with such classics as well-being. Although HQL needs slight alteration to broaden its assessment of well-being and life satisfaction, it holds promise as more than an accessory in the study of health and well-being in older people.
