AnnotationThe Australian Minister for Aged Care presents this first in a series of discussion papers which looks at the present situation of an ageing population and possible implications for Australians over the coming decades. The paper focuses on health promotion and illness prevention issues and strategies from a population health perspective. The aim of the healthy ageing theme is to examine measures that, over a person's lifetime, will enhance quality of life and improve life expectancy. Three further discussion papers will deal with other aspects of positive ageing: world class care; independence and self provision; and attitude, lifestyle and community support. (RH).
