AnnotationA number of interventions may have potential benefits for people with dementia. This review considers a number of recent claims concerning the validity of a wide range of communication interventions currently used in dementia care: aromatherapy; attention focusing; bright light therapy; cognitive simulation programmes; communication adaptive coping strategies and communication facilitation strategies; dance; environmental adaptations; errorless learning; massage; memory retraining; multiple therapies; multisensory environment; music; pet therapy; reality orientation; reminiscence; simulated presence therapy; space retrieval; toys; validation; and walking. Other therapy approaches have been described, but documented evidence concerning the efficacy and effectiveness of these is limited. An overall aim of intervention should be to improve "quality of life", for which it is difficult to measure the outcome. (RH).
