AnnotationThe Local Government Information Unit (LGIU) campaign, Celebrating Local Democracy, was launched in November 2000, to celebrate the ongoing work of local authorities of all persuasions, in tackling issues central to people's lives. The aim is to ensure that the vital contribution made by local democracy is properly recognised and understood by policy makers and influencers throughout Britain. This campaign pack include the first two of a series of case studies: environmental action and the work of Leicester City Council; and community safety, describing Bradford Metropolitan District Council's partnership with agencies, focusing on work with the police in tackling crime. By March 2001, eight further case studies will have been published, covering council initiatives to include health and social care, transport, equalities, and social inclusion. (RH).
