AnnotationCaring for people is a complex job involving a variety of skills, abilities, attitudes and knowledge. Often, though, care work is seen as job that anyone can do, and the important skills needed are not widely recognised. This book is designed to give the reader a firm foundation of understanding on which to build. It sets out: the principles of good quality care in a residential or nursing home; and the knowledge and skills required to look after older people living away from their own homes. Topics covered include: respecting privacy and dignity; encouraging independence; valuing individuality and difference; promoting choice and self-esteem; recognising rights and responsibilities; health and ageing; and rights and responsibilities as a care assistant. The book also provides information about recognition of competence through the system of National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs) or SVQs in Scotland. There is also guidance on other kinds of training available. (RH).
