AnnotationPopulation ageing is expected to lead to a higher need for expenditure on health and social care, for which the Taskforce (set up by the Ageing Population Panel) identifies the following: cardiovascular disease; cancer; degenerative diseases; musculo-skeletal disorders; psychological problems; age-related disabilities; long-term care; and "emerging needs" brought about by the impact of climate change. The Taskforce also considers dangers to the older person (e.g. loss of independence, reduced quality of life), and dangers to the health care system (e.g. shortage of health professionals, lack of access and quality of life). Greater life expectancy can also present opportunities, such as developments in information technology (IT), social participation, intergenerational exchange, and continuing education. The Taskforce makes recommendations accordingly; it stresses that the work of health and social services departments should be co-ordinated, to remove duplication of and barriers to care delivery.
