AnnotationThe way we care for and house the very old is increasingly being questioned by professionals and academics who see a much wider range of options available in other European countries. Very sheltered housing, for example, is one alternative that not only gives residents opportunities to socialise but also the security of knowing that help is available. In this first of two articles on the future of care homes, it is argued that residential care homes are an anachronism. This article by the Chairman of the House of Commons Health Select Committee is the edited text of a speech made to the Housing 21 conference in January 2000 organised by Capita. (RH).
