Annotation | Joint reviews provide an independent assessment of how well the public is being served by social services locally. Sunderland Social Services is serving most people well and has promising prospects for future development. Taken as a whole, Sunderland has the highest level of socio-economic deprivation in its comparator group of authorities. The Review Team found that the Authority works hard to continually improve services. Users and carers who replied to the questionnaire were very satisfied with the quality of the services received. The Authority places considerable emphasis on the role and needs of carers and has a strong relationship with the Sunderland Carers Centre. The pattern of services indicates a higher than average use of residential and nursing home places, and wider coverage by the Home Support Service than average. Three key themes are identified which need to inform the future management agenda: using partnerships to improve core services; making service development more systematic; and improving service quality and range.
