Annotation | The role of grandparents in the UK is attracting attention in both social policy and the media, but for grandparenting, read grandmotherhood. This article outlines two current pieces of British research that use feminist theory to investigate contemporary grandmotherhood. Researchers at the Oxford Centre for Population Ageing are using quantitative and qualitative methods in a study focusing on the mother-daughter relationship within the context of child-care for lone parent daughters. At ACIOG, grandmothers' perceived family obligations are being explored through the mother-daughter relationship. The authors of this article give a brief overview of some current literature on grandmothering, focusing on demographic trends and the importance of "gender", on which more research, particularly on the role of grandfathers - which has been neglected in the American gerontological literature.
