Annotation | The purpose of this study was to explore the professional context within which frail older people and their families make decisions regarding caregiving. Designed as an exploratory qualitative study, interviews were conducted with providers from nine areas of service related to caregiving resources: adult day care; ageing services; assisted living; chaplain hospice services; geriatric assessment; home health care; large-scale nursing home administration; small-scale nursing home administration; and geriatric medicine. Analysis of data revealed four provider styles or modes of interacting with older people and their families: listener, educator, encourager, and advocate. 7 of the 9 providers mentioned educator, whereas least frequently mentioned in only 5 cases was listener. Preferences of provider style may affect their communication with clients. (RH). |
