Annotation | Increased expenditures for prescription drugs have placed older people in the spotlight of health reforms in Canada, because they are the main users of prescription drugs. Substantial improvements could be made that would enhance therapy benefits and minimise adverse effects. Four aspects of prescription drug use are reviewed: the basic epidemiology of drug use; the appropriateness of drug use; non-medical factors influencing the use of prescription drug treatment; and interventions aimed at optimising prescription drug treatment.
