AnnotationThis was an epidemiological study funded by the Indian Council of Medical Research, which aimed to determine the pattern of psychiatric morbidity on those aged 60 and over in 7 randomly selected villages, and to ascertain any causative or contributory role of biosociodemographic factors. Prevalence of psychiatric morbidity was 43.32% in a geriatric group of 561, compared with only 4.66% in a non-geriatric group of 9,456. In descending order of frequency, the psychiatric morbidity pattern comprised neurotic depression, manic-depressive psychosis depression, non-depressive psychosis depression, and anxiety. Socially, economically and educationally disadvantaged subjects were found to be more psychiatrically ill. Data indicate that by 2000, there will be some 28 million psychiatrically ill people in India, who need to be treated as a separate group by health policy planners. (RH).
