Annotation | Although the Carers (Recognition and Services) Act 1995 is a landmark in social policy legislation policy, it is still not achieving its intended outcome of enabling carers to have their needs assessed and met. This review outlines findings of a Social Policy Research Unit (SPRU) report on an evaluation of the process and outcomes of assessment under the Act. It also highlights the problems for young carers in "Growing up caring: vulnerability and transition to adulthood - young carers' experiences" (National Youth Agency, 2000): their transition to adulthood can be compromised by their caring responsibilities. Carers should be given information about their entitlements under the Act, as well as on the full range of services available. (RH). |
