AnnotationThis overview considers important areas of recent research into the needs of older people, including technological support and meal choices for people with dementia. "Older people speaking out" (YPS, 2000) confirms older people's increasing influence as service users. "The ASTRID guide" (Hawker Publications, 2000) illustrates the uses and potential of assistive technology. A survey by the Alzheimer's Society, "Food for thought" examines problems of eating and drinking for people with dementia. "Older people with dementia and social work" (Practice, vol 12, no 2, 2000), presents results of an evaluative study. The Carers (Recognition and Services) Act 1995 continues to attract interest. Findings are outlined of the Social Policy Research Unit's "Carers' needs and the Carers Act: an evaluation of the process and outcomes of assessment" (SPRU, 2000). The experiences of families in finding an appropriate residential placement for older relatives is examined in Counsel and Care's report "The choice is yours?" (2000). The review raises questions and points for social work practice. (RH).
