AnnotationPrevious editions of the PSIGE Newsletter (no 59 and no 66) have reported results of a survey of a general practice in Salford and its provision of mental health services to older people. This article reports on evaluations of training courses for primary health care nurses (PHCNs), initially in Salford, and in neighbouring health authorities (Trafford, Bury, Rochdale, Wigan and Bolton). The Salford training package has demonstrated that PHCNs can be trained in brief assessment skills and management techniques suitable for use in the primary healthcare setting. The evaluations have confirmed definite increases in participants' knowledge, skills and confidence. The informal links which have been forged between mental health professionals and PHCNs should not be underestimated. (RH).
