AnnotationThis study aimed to evaluate whether a cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) carer intervention reduced the subjective burden of care for carers of people with Alzheimer's disease (AD) and produced clinical benefits for those with AD. The study, carried out in Manchester, tried to incorporate the findings of previous research, and drew on family intervention research concerning carers of people with schizophrenia. The article is a brief resumé of the project, describes some of the interventions, and reports on the results. These suggest that the family intervention was clinically acceptable to patients and carers, and was effective in reducing measures of stress and depression in carers of people with AD. (RH).
