Annotation | The demographic characteristics of US veteran and non-veteran migrants aged 60+ in 1990 are profiled, and their migration patterns over four decades are compared. A substantial increase in migration by World War II veterans was expected when they retired. With minor exceptions, the top 10 destinations in the last census are states in the Sunbelt and Pacific Northwest that are well-known for the attraction of their amenities. Non-veteran migrants show a wider geographic range that includes the Sunbelt states as well as states in the Northeast and Midwest. The profile of migrant characteristics suggest that differences may be due, in part, to age and gender differences. The life course migration model helps put these findings in perspective. (RH). |
