AnnotationThis study is based on data from the Asset and Health Dynamics Among the Oldest-Old (AHEAD) study conducted by the University of Michigan Institute for Survey Research, and considers the need for greater information with regard to advance care planning. Older people expect to draw on a diverse array of other people - spouses, children and grandchildren - to make health care decisions when they are unable to do so. Completion of advance directives such as living wills and durable powers of attorney for health care was more usual among Whites and the well-educated. Ways of strengthening knowledge and understanding need to be developed for other ethnic groups and those with lower educational attainment. More informal communication among family members on issues concerning advanced care planning needs to be encouraged. (RH).
