AnnotationA systematic literature review found 43 studies of reality orientation (RO) for dementia, of which 6 were randomised controlled trials. Results were subjected to meta-analysis. Effects on cognition and behaviour were significant in favour of treatment. The evidence indicates that RO has benefits on both cognition and behaviour for dementia sufferers. However, a continued programme may be needed to sustain potential benefits. Future research should evaluate RO in well-designed multi-centre trials. (RH).
