AnnotationThe author argues that a social-psychological model of dementia care is not enough; an understanding of neurological impairments must be integrated with it to form a new model for practice that removes the barriers causing disability. The model proposed should not only reveal the neurological impairment which affects a person's ability to function in the current environment, but must also reveal the still remaining abilities of the individual. Equally, caregivers' environmental and personal contexts must be taken into account, by virtue of their role in upholding the personhood of the individual. We can ensure that the right environment is created for the person, so that he or she is not disempowered. (RH).
