AnnotationCare staff have a considerable impact on the quality of service experienced by older people living in residential care. The divergent occupational training available to care home staff in the UK and Germany is questioned. Findings of a small-scale qualitative study conducted in residential care settings in south-east England and northern Germany, establish the connection between the nature of emotional and functional labour, the need to provide suitable care training to care home staff, and the impact on the quality of care provided to residents. Although training is available to care home staff in both countries, the participation rate in both is low. There are no extrinsic rewards for those who participate in training. However, the resulting improvement in quality of care is acknowledged by both home management and care staff. (RH).
