Annotation | older women's recollections of grocery shopping in Dundee in the 1950s are explored. The research provides oral history data on the relationship between customers and grocers on a period spanning the end of food rationing, the introduction of self-service shopping and supermarkets, new convenience foods, and considerable changes in household incomes and aspirations throughout the UK. However, while there were fond memories of traditional grocers' shops, accounts were only nostalgic to a point. Lifelong experiences gave additional insights into the limitations of modern food retailing practices rather than blindness to its advantages. (RH). |
