AnnotationBuilding on a social history commissioned to celebrate the centenary of the Birmingham Settlement, this article focuses on the Settlement's innovative contributions to the provision of community services for older people, an area traditionally dominated by the voluntary sector. After charting the origins of the Settlement movement in general and the Birmingham Settlement in particular, the article describes various older people's projects developed by the Settlement during its first 100 years (1899-1999), emphasising their pioneering nature. Individual older people's involvement in researching the Settlement's history is described. (RH).
