AnnotationResearch on age differences in participation in training and development programmes tends to conclude that there is a marked drop after the age of 45. However, most studies use formal training as an indicator, rather than informal and work-based learning. In this article, a conceptual model for structural qualitative studies of contextual variables (learning environment) is outlined and supported by empirical findings. Learning outcomes are divided into individual or collective operative learning, learning to learn, and higher order organisational learning. A summary of research suggests that there are few studies relating to the latter type of outcomes to age differences. (RH).
