AnnotationIn the Nordic countries, programmes aimed at increasing employees' work abilities have emphasised physical competence. This article discusses a multidisciplinary approach, "Age, health and competence in working life", which focuses on developing a person as a whole. The results of an intermediate evaluation of this programme is presented. The target group consisted of employees aged 40 and over, most with low basic education, and all working in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Finland. The 30-month development programme contained activities that were arranged to increase participants' professional skills, health and functional capacity, as well as to furnish them with new ideas for leisure time. 80% of participants reported positive effects on their attitudes towards learning new activities in mid-life. Older workers benefited most from this kind of multidisciplinary programme, suggesting that with an updated education and professional skills, older workers can continue to be an important and experienced resource for the future labour market.
