Annotation | Three publications are reviewed which reflect interest among social policy analysts in life course related needs and the distribution of welfare between age groups. The reviewer notes that work comparing the service needs of children and older people is rare. "Caring for children and older people - a comparison for European policies and practices" by T Rostgaard and T Fridburg (Danish Institute of National Research, 1998) aims to describe how the needs for child day care and for care and support for older people are met in different countries. "Rights and realities: comparing new developments in long-term for older people" edited by Caroline Glendinning (Policy Press, 1998) assesses trends in services in the UK, Germany, the Netherlands, Denmark and Australia. "The politics of old age in Europe" edited by Alan Walker and Gerhard Naegele (Open University Press, 1999) combines country-based and cross-national analyses to assess the politics of welfare and the role of interest groups and government. The book notes the lack of any clear relationship between older people's involvement in decision-making and the degree to which decisions are made for them. (RH). |
