AnnotationChanges in the formal health care system and in the health of population are likely to increase the need for informal care for older people. At the same time, the ability of families to provide care is likely to decrease given their employment and marital circumstances. The US National Survey of Families and Households is used to examine the role of friends in care provision. Friends seem less likely than family to take on care responsibilities when those responsibilities may conflict with other roles. Policies that encourage participation of non-family members will be important. (RH).
