AnnotationRelationships between coronary catheterization patients' and wive's characteristics and their perceptions of social support were explored with 124 male patients (mean age 59) and their wives (mean age 56). While visiting hospital, both patient and wife independently completed a brief questionnaire that assessed psychological and physical health characteristics and perceptions of social support. Congruent with the interdependent and overlapping contexts and reciprocal relationships assumptions of Reveson's (1994) ecological/contextual framework, perceptions of social support were generally found to be influenced by characteristics of the perceiver, the support provider, and their interaction. Concerns for supportive and helpful caregiving are discussed. (RH).
