AnnotationThe role of general practitioner hospital beds has been in doubt in recent years, and requires review in the light of the introduction of Primary Care Trusts (PCTs) and "intermediate care". This article uses information from the Contract Management System for General Medicine and Surgery and from returns for geriatric medicine and GP beds to compare hospital bed use in district general hospitals (DGHs) and in GP beds for practices with and without access to GP beds in the Scottish Highlands. The findings generally replicate work in England. However, a lower use of surgical beds may reflect more flexible use of GP beds in the Highlands for observation or rehabilitation, possibly related to the greater distances involved than those in English studies.
