AnnotationOf approximately 28,000 over 65s in Warrington, there are some 2,600 prevalent dementia cases of different types. In this study, 198 cases of Alzheimer's disease (AD) referred to the author between May 1991 and May 1993 were compared with two control groups (164 other dementia, and 176 non-dementing) in respect of their family, medical and personal histories. 58 of the AD cases reported family history of dementia, compared with 35 of all controls. The odds ratios for smoking and head injuries were significant only in male patients. The study confirms age and family history of dementia in first-degree relatives as the main risk factor for AD. The role of smoking in risk reduction is unclear. No association was found between previous aluminium related occupation and the risk of AD in later life. (RH).
