Annotation | Should adult education for older people and teacher training to teach older people be a matter for gerontology or for a component of education, namely, gerontagogy? Stephen Katz claims that gerontology is a multidisciplinary science having no disciplinary object of its own. David Peterson and Frank Glendenning have both proposed the term "educational gerontology" to refer to the educational intervention for older people. However, this concept links education to ageing rather than to older people in a teach/learn situation. The authors of this article instead propose the concept of gerontagogy, located within a model of education positioned after pedagogy and andragogy. They describe the different types of courses in gerontagogy. For more detail on the university curriculum in gerontology, and to develop research in gerontagogy, the reader is referred to two articles already published in "Educational Gerontology": "The University of the Third Age: role of senior citizens" (vol 21, 1996, pp 337-344); and "Essential learning contents in the curriculum for a certificate degree in personalised education for older adults" (Vol 23, 1997, pp 149-150).
