Annotation | This study of some 100 workers in Singapore aimed to document their views on preparation for retirement, the factors and difficulties impinging on their plans, and expectations of life after 60. A qualitative methodology was used, comprising 13 focus group discussions over 6 months across the three major ethnic groups (i.e. Chinese, Malays, and Indians). Each were further subdivided into higher- and lower-income groups. Findings were compared with quantitative data from the 1990 Census and a representative survey focusing on the assets and economic profile of people in their 50s in Singapore. Results highlight the prevailing pressures on the older workforce caused by the rising cost of living, increasing medical costs, and upgrading of skills required to keep up with changing technology in the workplace. Without help from their children, this cohort felt that their own assets and financial possessions would be inadequate for old age. Greater need for public education on retirement planning, with special focus on women, was indicated. (RH). |
