AnnotationThe Scottish Health Advisory Service (SHAS) visited mental health services in Highland at a time when an old hospital was about to close and the the replacement hospital was nearing completion. SHAS identified problems that may have been linked to the long run-down and under-investment in the old hospital, with too much focus on the new development. There was rapid response to SHAS feedback. The transfer of patients and staff took place smoothly, resulting in improved clinical care and patient satisfaction. The report also examines community services, which need to be developed. Some very good examples were found of joint community working and partnership in some rural areas, which serve as a model for elsewhere; but there is geographical inequity in the provision and quality of services. The report makes recommendations accordingly. (RH).
