AnnotationThe Joseph Rowntree Foundation (JRF) "Transitions after 50" research programme is concerned with issues that arise for people making the transition from work to retirement, especially withdrawal from work before the state retirement age. This report launches "Transitions after 50", and brings together information on what is presently known about three aspects of this transitional phase. The first is older people's opportunities at work: their fortunes in the labour market, and employers' attitudes. Work for this review was undertaken by the New Policy Foundation, and is based on information from sources such as the British Household Panel Survey (BHPS). Geraldine Barker and Ruth Hancock examine the second aspect, the effect of working patterns in later life on retirement income. Finally, Justin Davis Smith looks at ways in which people over 50 develop unpaid activities, such as volunteering and caring, beyond the context of paid work. The Cabinet Office report, "Winning the generation game" (TSO, 2000) introduced these issues into public policy. "Life after 50" sets out what is known so far, and how knowledge can be strengthened.
