AnnotationAs part of their on-going support for the "Dignity on the Ward" campaign, Help the Aged and the Orders of St John Trust commissioned this study to explore the characteristics of acute NHS wards which have been nominated for their good practice in relation to older people. Four shared principles are identified which appear to underpin good practice: valuing fundamental practice; fostering stability while embracing change; establishing clear and equitable therapeutic goals; and commitment to an explicit and shared set of values. Older people, their family carers and staff suggested goals and challenges for improving the care experience: aiming for continuity of care; involving patients, their families and local communities; meeting the needs of those with confusion or dementia; helping people come to terms with death on the ward; attending to small details to maintain dignity; and managing change effectively. There are six "senses" which can provide a rationale for care delivery and contribute to enhanced job satisfaction and morale for staff. These senses are of security, significance, belonging, purpose, continuity and achievement. (RH).
