Annotation | The conference, chaired by Edward Stourton of the BBC Radio Four "Today" programme, marked a crucial stage in the Help the Aged "Dignity on the Ward" campaign, and the 900th anniversary of the first hospital of St John. The conference highlighted examples of good practice and demonstrated how these could be replicated throughout the country, which this report summarises. John Hutton, Minister of State for Health, commented on quality of care issues and outlined principles of the forthcoming National Services Framework (NSF). Geoff Shephard of the Health Advisory Service (HAS 2000) discussed implementation, setting standards and improving services. Simon Festing reported on the two year Dignity on the Ward campaign, and on Help the Aged's study, "Promoting excellence in care", a blueprint of how hospital care for older patients can be improved. Geraldine Cunningham of the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) spoke on how dignity for nurses brings dignity to patients. Terry Owen, Volunteer Placement Manager at University Hospital, Aintree, described the role played by the National Association of Volunteer Service Managers (NAVSM) within the NHS. (RH). |
