AnnotationIdentifying the physiological factors most relevant to older people's functional independence is critical in designing effective interventions. It has been suggested that muscle power may be more directly related to impaired physical performance than muscle strength in older people. The authors tested the hypothesis that peak muscle power is closely associated with self-reported functional status in sedentary women living at home. They used baseline data collected as part of a 1-year clinical trial of a combined strength, power and endurance training programme for 80 older American women (mean age 74.8) with 1-5 chronic diseases and a history of functional impairment and/or falls. Leg press power and habitual activity were the only two factors found to contribute independently to functional status. (RH).
