Annotation | Abstracts of poster presentations at the meeting cover the following themes: cardiology; falls, fractures and trauma; health services research; neurology and neurosciences; pharmacology; and respiratory problems. These are preceded, firstly, by the Marjorie Warren Lecture given by Sir John Grimley Evans, a paper entitled "Service and research for an ageing population". He considers the development of geriatric medicine, pioneered by Marjorie Warren. Secondly, the 2000 Amulree Essay Prize, "CPR - when is it acceptable to withhold it? and a hospital survey of 'Not for CPR' orders", by Laura Landon. She reviews the literature on cardiopulmonary resuscitation, with reference to advanced directives and surrogate decision-making, quality of life considerations, and the concept of futility in CPR decision-making. She points to difficulties in making such decisions, and refers to guidelines that hospital trusts should be implementing. (RH). |
