Annotation | The present study aimed to adapt the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) for the cultural context of Bangladesh and for populations irrespective of literacy skills. The Bangla Adaptation of the MMSE (BAMSE) was tested with 672 older Bangladeshis (272 literate, and 410 illiterate). The literate were tested with both the MMSE and BAMSE, to enable comparison between the two. The BAMSE was found to be less sensitive to age and education than the MMSE. In the socio-cultural context of Bangladesh, irrespective of literacy skills, the BAMSE can be used to test cognitive function of normal older people. However, further research is needed to assess its effectiveness in detecting dementia. (RH). |
