Annotation | Articles in this issue of Public Policy and Aging draw attention to a growing phenomenon in the US: the inability of significant numbers of parents to support their own children. This trend points to an increased willingness by grandparents - often in difficult circumstances - to play the role their own children cannot. The role of the Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF) programme with regard to such family arrangements in individual states is discussed, and illustrated by case studies of two grandmothers in Tennessee. Another article considers the origins of Federal programmes that have tried to address such pressing social needs. (RH). |
