Annotation | How do older people use their sense of self to cope with the change from being alone in their own homes, to living with many people they would not choose as friends? This article outlines how the research analysis process used by the author for a research study at Keele University in 1998 can inform staff about everyday practices that promote a positive sense of self for older people living in care homes. Themes emerging from four older women's views of "self" included assaults on self; making connections with the "old" self; inner reflections and thoughts; establishment of self leading to a sense of belonging; and the core sense of self.
