AnnotationOlder people are an integral part of our society and should be regarded as a valuable asset, not a burden. There is a real gulf between what they need and the services currently being provided to them. Immediate action is required to provide today's older generation with the quality of life and dignity they deserve. These were some of the major issues to emerge from the Symposium on Working Together for Wellbeing in Older Age, arranged by Help the Aged and General Accident Life (part of the CGU Group) at Wadham College, Oxford. The Symposium's aim was to summarise experts' evidence, advice and experience associated with long term care at a key stage in the development of Government policy. The main points made concerned: a need for leadership; focus on independence and inclusion; a stronger voice for older people; funding long term care; relevant and appropriate services; quality and standards; advice and information; and innovation and new models.
