AnnotationSpeaking Up For Our Age was launched by Help the Aged in 1998. It aims to ensure that the voices of older people are heard on matters that affect them, and to involve those whose voices are not often heard (those who are housebound, from ethnic minorities, or living in rural areas). The Charities Evaluation Service (CES) was asked to evaluate the programme to ensure it was targeting its help most effectively. CES visited and interviewed a number of forums and groups run by older people around the country, and received feedback from others through a questionnaire. The evaluation found a wide range of different forums, set up by development workers, individual pressure, local government or union support. Forums considered issues of local or national concern. The evaluation also looked at the structure and resources of forums, difficulties faced and how these were overcome, and future development needs. Consequently, Help the Aged hopes to be able to target its support for local groups and forums more effectively. (RH).
