AnnotationLittle is known about the lifestyles of older people. This Help the Aged and Yours Magazine survey set out to explore the views, concerns and life situations of a randomly, if self-selected, group of 1,317 over 55s who responded to the June 1998 magazine questionnaire. The questionnaire covered the following themes: social demography; retirement; health and social care services; accommodation; transport and mobility; expenditure; and income. Data was analysed by staff from the Tizard Centre at the University of Kent. The survey indicates a generally satisfied sample of older people, who lead varied and interesting lives, have regular contact with family and friends, are happy where they live, and are able to afford the essentials of life. For a small but significant group - widowed older women, and those over the age of 80 - life is mush less satisfactory. Problems include reduced incomes (resulting from not having an occupational pension), decreasing social contacts, isolation, and either poorer health or greater longevity. The implications for policy are discussed. (RH).
