AnnotationThe aim of the European Union's (EU) Structural Funds is "to promote economic and social cohesion". Two of its four funds will be of most interest to organisations concerned with older people: the European Social Fund (ESF) which supports the development of poorer than average regions; and the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) which aims to prevent and combat unemployment. Examples of Structural Fund projects, including "Action for the people of Merseyside", indicate the inclusion of actions to improve health and social care, transport systems, and community development. Eurolink Age seeks a higher profile for older people in Structural Fund policies, plans and projects. The report suggests that non-governmental organisations (NGOs) need to find out about the Fund and what it is doing for each EU Member State, and to co-ordinate their information-seeking strategies and action plans.
