AnnotationAids such as alarm links help older people every day, but with better use of technology, more frail older people could stay at home. The article outlines the community alarm system developed in Northamptonshire, as well as how assistive technology in general has already been in use for some years. The article also describes a "smart home" opened in Gloucester in June 2000 by the housing association, Housing 21, which claims to be first to focus on the needs of people with dementia and cognitive impairment. Harry Cayton of the Alzheimer's Society expresses reservations as to the capacity of technology to make a difference. (RH).
