AnnotationThis is very much a guide for the layman. Written from an American perspective, the authors offer their own experience as specialists in the care of older people, the personal experiences of other caregivers, and the knowledge of other experts in the field. The book is arranged in four parts. Part 1, Becoming a caregiver, outlines the emotional caregiving challenges, and considers family relationships, resolving family caregiving issues, and protecting one's own health. Part 2, Knowing what's normal and what's not, looks at understanding the physical and mental changes in ageing, and promoting the health of the older person being cared for. Part 3, Providing personal care, looks at preventive measures in more detail: managing medications; skin, foot and wound care; managing incontinence; oral care and help with eating and feeding; promoting safe mobility; and providing emotional care. Part 4, Getting help, outlines the health, social and community services in the US which may provide outside support for the caregiver. (RH).
