AnnotationThe Taskforce was set up by the Ageing Population Panel, to consider the acquisition and transfer of information and knowledge, and the use of information and communications technology (ICT). The Government must be urged to make it easier for people to remain in the workforce for longer, and the Taskforce suggests possible schemes: "flexijob.com" (ICT-based agencies providing flexible work packages in line with changing work patterns); financially-assisted volunteers; a Third Age Technology Initiative (TATI); and Generation M (the Mature Entrepreneur), who should be encouraged to set up new businesses, and be provided with technology and business support, and financial incentives. The Taskforce identified barriers inhibiting the application of ICT, not least attitudes towards and perceptions of older people. Also discussed are the role of good design, and the supportive or assistive aspects of independent living. Given the wide range of ICT applications, the Taskforce calls for its findings to be embedded in the agendas of all Foresight Panels. The closing date for comments on this discussion paper and on the main consultation document, "The age shift" is 15 September 2000. (RH).
